Artefact 1: Paper
Photograph of the artefact

What is the function of this artefact?
Ans: It is paper, used to contain writings. A platform for writing and drawing, and for ink to stay on. Like a surface for the ink to take shape.

Identify and describe 3 differences to its modern day version.

Ans:
1) Modern paper is made from the whole tree, so trees and cut down(no chance to regrow). While ancient paper is made from only twigs. Which does not require to regrow whole trees to make, only requires to regrow the tree's twigs.
2) Modern paper is made using a lot of chemicals and/or machines. It is a complicated process with many steps. While ancient paper is just boiling the twigs and filtering out the big pieces leaving only the pulp. The pulp is then moved into a big tank with water. Then it is sifted out and only a thin layer of pulp and left to dry. That is ancient paper.
3) Modern ink is thicker while ancient ink is more diluted.

What is the function of this artefact?
Ans: It is ink, used to make a marking when writing. It is liquifies upon contact with water and solidifies upon contact with air. An ink stone is used to hold the liquified ink. Water is spread on the surface of the ink stone and the ink is held in the hand and rubbed onto the surface of the ink stone in a circular motion.

Identify and describe 3 differences to its modern day version.
Ans:

1) Modern ink is always in liquid form and stored in liquid form. While ancient ink is stored in a solidified form, when needed it is liquified for use via rubbing on a surface spread with water.
2) Modern ink is stored in the pen(or brush) itself. While ancient ink is held in a ink stone where the user has to constantly dip into for ink.
3) Modern ink is thicker while ancient ink is more diluted.

2) Modern ink holder is enclosed. While ancient in holder is exposed to the air.
3) Modern ink holder's only function is to hold and store the ink. While ancient ink holder is also used to liquify the ink(which used to be stored solid).
